Where can I find photographs (not drawings from old fashion catalogs) of women in vintage 40s-50s attire?

I’m enamored by the fashion, hair, and accessories; I would love to see if I can pull off some of the looks.

Something that can suggest how to put together an all around look would be amazing! (Suits/ skirt and blouse/ dress, shoes, handbag, gloves, hat/hairstyle…)

Question by lizzo96: What should I get for my friend’s birthday?
Me and 5 friends are all pitching in 20 dollars or less. My friend just got a new room so something that goes with this comforter would be good. I already looked at the stuff on the site that goes with it, but they are too expensive. She also like music and movies a lot, and goes on the computer all the time. Because she is only getting one gift, we want it to be good. What should I get her? I was thinking maybe a comfy chair that matches the bed, so if you can find one post the link.

Gothic clothing a style of wearing clothes by members of Goth subculture began in the UK during early 1980s in the gothic rock scene. It is considered a dark and sometimes gloomy style of dress, which includes wearing gothic pants, shirts and corsets. Gothic fashion is considered morbid as it features black lips, black dyed hair, dark eyeliner, dark finger-nails and black clothes. Thus, gothic fashion clothing is a great way to express dark feelings & thoughts.

Gothic clothing fashion, which was also considered a protest against the extravagance of the 1980s, can be described as a profusion of dark velvets, fishnets, lace, and leather shaded with scarlet, tight corsets, gloves, accessorized with silver ornaments. More elegant and sophisticated styles of dressing were seen in the early Gothic period. Sleeves became tight and the forearms enjoyed more importance. Minimal trimmings on the Gothic dresses were also a feature of the early gothic period. The Gothic dresses became longer and the necklines went deeper. With the passage of time, gothic clothing styles changed with the fabrics looking stiffer in their appearance.

One of the gothic garments, gothic corset, is a piece of clothing that shapes a girl’s body like an hourglass. It is historical in nature as it traces you back to the Victorian and medieval ages. The color of the boots is usually dark black. However, one in a blue moon, you can see Goths wearing bloody-red boots. Gothic boots were usually heavy as they were used at work.

In 1910s, looks gave a boost to some kind of Goth fashion. She inspired many to follow the style of her dark eye-shadow. Musidora, Bettie Page, David Bowie and Robert Smith are the other gothic style icons. Gothic clothing is not exclusive to American and European countries. The clothing fashion is also gaining popularity in eastern countries such as China and India. The important point of gothic clothing is to bring out your best gothic features.

Accessories are rulling the Runway for 2009. Brilliant colors, exuberant prints, and statements of jewels lead off what hopes to be your best year yet.  A sophisticated and pulled together look will exude a strong confidence in any woman.  While the dress may be simple, your personality will shine through with the most current accessories.  
 Snakeskin, ostrich, crocodile, and plenty of cheetah will be found everywhere.  Shoes, handbags, bangles, scarves and belts will carry the motif in plenty, and I’ve found you can never have enough.  The fearless will wear their skin in one of the bright candy colors of fushia or canary yellow.

  Jewelry.   The shoes for spring take bold steps.  Architectural heels, broad straps, graphic shapes, platform soles, and the continued popularity of the gladiator sandal create bold statements for any outfit.  A strong shoe adds depth to the feminine, fluid shapes that come with the spring lines.  

  Embellishment.  Accessories, handbags, and shoes will offer up plenty more when shown with fringe, bows, flowers, crystals, and ruching.  Paying attention to the small details when dressing will add miles to your overall look.  Sequins, beads, and lame’ made everything a show stopper – Ralph Lauren showed plenty of shimmer and richness throughout his runway looks.  

  Scarves and shawls will continue to be a welcome addition to dressing.  From feminine florals to strong, abstract graphics, women will find themselves reaching for a scarf to be the ultimate topping.  

 Show your environmentally conscious side.  As more and more consumers look to conserve, save, and reuse, one of the hot designer accessories will become the reusable tote.  By appealing to our sustainable side, designers are adding these to the mix.  While Chanel’s ,525.00 leather version seems a tad excessive, look for those with pretty prints, logos and shapes to make grocery shopping more chic.  

Today’s woman still wants to shop and update her wardrobe, even in this financially challenging time.   She will be looking for higher quality items that will be versatile and long lasting.   One of the most highly anticipated fashion influences will come from  Michelle Obama, with her focus on unusual details to liven up classic dressing.  Designers will be challenged to create a more versatile item that can work for day, office, and even evening.
